Attention: Noir Cat Sightings

Good evening everyone of noir106. My undercover photographer came through with several photos he had had taken of Noir Cat and it appears she is on the run. She has been taking refuge in Belize for the past two weeks, but just today she vanished. She is said to be in Finland, yet my undercover photographer lost sight of her when she ran among a group of black cats that resembled her. Just by this action, it seems apparent that she does not want to be found. It is imperative that more tips come in as well as more sighting photos since we have lost her trail. We are in the process of calling Miss Monica Smith to enable us to find Noir Cat in Finland. If anyone can provide us with any information regrading this noir escape, please tweet us with the tag #wheresnoircat @HoN_Getaways so we can bring her safely home ASAP.

Sincerly yours,

Sebastian Crane

House of Noir Getaways: A Pinteresting Agency (2 pts.)

https://www.pinterest.com/nopainnocrane/house-of-noir-getaways/

This is something I show to clients to help them decide where they could make their noir escape. There are a variety of locations to choose from and this gives the clients many options. I’ve had clients who have chosen tropical locations and some who would rather bundle up and choose an arctic region. This Pin board provides various examples of places they can travel to. The population size is a factor they can consider in choosing a location; some may want a city live with vast amounts of people and others may want a more secluded, quiet area. We detail this information to our clients as well as the kinds of activities one can do in the locations they are interested in. The amazing thing about this agency is that the possibilities of travel locations are endless and we can help you travel to as many as needed with ease. I chose appealing photos since clients would be more inclined to chose a certain location based on the visuals that are presented to them.

“I am Free” House of Noir Getaways Theme Song (4 pts.)

Introducing the House of Noir Getaways agency. With us, you can make your greatest and most discrete noir escape when times are troublesome or threatening. Lana del Rey has been one of my favorite artists of our time since her music encapsulates complex emotion. Her song “Ride” details the story of the necessity to make a great escape and see the world while also moving on into the promises of the future. But purely, it conveys the idea of freedom, which is something each one of our clients is guaranteed. Whether going to the warm sands of a tropical island or the snow-kissed mountains, House of Noir Getaways can take you there through different types of transportation. With our co-sponsors, Stardust Airlines and the Abandon agency, you are given the options to travel by plane, car, ship, etc. This is placed into the song as a way to tell our clients that all travel and escape to freedom is entirely possible with the help of House of Noir Getaways. When creating this with Janelle, we chose to keep some of Lana’s personal quotes that went with this song so that listeners could connect to the freedom she herself has. Quotes such as “When I’m at war with myself, I ride. I just ride,” “I am free.” This theme song is what our agency is all about: giving you the freedom you desire and making your noir disappearance a reality.

House of Noir Search Engine (2 pts.)

House of Noir Search Engine

Here is a search engine that Janelle created for the House of Noir group, which incorporated the font of the classic film series “The Godfather.” The choice of this font reflects how the House of Noir is full of suspenseful twists and turns; we like to think that we lead life with eccentricity and excitement. Although we are not a part of a family mob, we certainly are a group that will not be forgotten.

A Truly Stellar Story of the House of Noir (3 and a 1/2 pts.)

With this app, my colleague Janelle was able to illustrate the story of the House of Noir group. She found a photo of each of the members to give the viewers a visual of who was a part of the House of Noir agency. Also, she presented photos of the general places we come from. For example, I am from the thriving city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge was shown for this. She used this description on the second page of this Steller story:

The House of Noir. Full of golden-heart
jerks and a mysterious woman, the
House of Noir is certainly a wild ride.
From the shores of the west coast to
the live city streets, these 4 come
together to form a new agency. Jack
Spencer, the wealthy business man.
Sebastian Crane, the writer. Jeffrey
Davidson, the bartender. And Melody
Bay, the sultry singer. They unite as one
to create their agency, using all their
combined strengths to their advantage
and bringing a new mystery to the city.
This is House of Noir.

This Steller story summarizes how the members of the House of Noir came from different walks of life with regards to our lifestyles and where we hail from. This is meant to show that when our collaboration occurs, it is an unstoppable and breath taking force. Great minds and hearts come together for the purpose of expressing creativity and developing a mysterious agency.

Our agency we created is the House of Noir Getaways. If you would like to know more about this agency, follow more of the links on this page. You will not be disappointed. Get ready to go on the trip of your life, ladies and gentlemen.

A Painful Flashback

Recently I was a participant on the “Find Yourself a Noir Lover” on the House of Noir Channel. Melody Bay was looking for love and she had the chance to meet 3 bachelors, including myself. The following are the questions that were asked and my responses:

  • We would all like to know the answer to this one: What would you plan for a fun first date? Well, to make things interesting, I would surprise her by ordering some flowers to be delivered at her workplace with a note that says “Meet me downstairs.” We’d go to her favorite restaurant and we would order each other’s dishes, ones we’ve both never had and see how that plays out. Then I would take her out for a night on the town. Go on the boardwalk, get to know her likes, dislikes, things like that. I would want to give her a date she could feel completely comfortable to be herself with me (looks to be lost in thought). Sounds like she really changed you. Her who? The girl you took on a date like this. She must have been special. Oh um…(other person tries to change subject with this question) So do you kiss on the first date? Depends on the girl (says with a smile). If she’s charming, how could I resist? (back to previous asker, as to get more information about Sebastian’s recent love). Alright let’s dig a little deeper now since we do have to find an honest man for Melody here. Have you ever hurt someone you love? *Cue flashback* Um..I have and I was just trying to protect her, but I hurt her more than I can ever know. I…(looks down, as if ashamed and tries to form words) Mr. Crane, are you alright? I’m sorry I can’t do this. There’s something I need to do. I can’t explain it all on live television, but dear Melody I am sorry if I have wasted any of your time. You will find a great guy because you are a classy woman with heart. I just can’t stand the thought of losing her when I know that I love her, even if I have never told her in person. Could you forgive me? Go out and get her (Melody says with encouragement. Sebastian then exits the show).
  • (This information was recorded by Janelle Pierangelino in a Google Doc. as the show commenced).

With the first question that was asked, I went back one of the dates I had with Sasha recently and we had the best time. That was the night I was about to just say it, tell her I loved her, but I was afraid she didn’t love me back or feel strongly for me. Ever since Margaret, no girl has made me feel completely safe until Sasha. There’s something about the way her eyes look into mine and I don’t want to be anywhere else but in that moment with her. She is genuine, beautiful, caring and I do love this girl. During the show, I had a flashback to a time where I hurt someone I loved. I remembered that I was knocked out by Sasha Kellogg’s horrible twin sister Shannon Mills and that she had come back to make Sasha’s life hell. She was certainly vengeful and she went to attack me when I did not agree to her notion of breaking Sasha’s heart by making her feel worthless. She held a knife to my throat and threatened that she would kill Sasha and frame me for her murder if I did not comply. I won’t ever forget how badly it hurt to see Sasha in tears. I told her everything was a lie and that I was just using her to pass some time. Her words still ring in my head. I remember watching her walk away and everything just moved in slow motion. All I wanted to do in that moment was chase her and tell her to her face those words weren’t true, but I knew that I had to protect her any way that I could. Shannon had already tried to murder Sasha by burning down her apartment, so I knew that she was serious in her demands.

On the show, I couldn’t allow myself to be chosen by Melody because I knew how wrong it would be to say yes to a person when you’re in love with someone else. Melody deserves a man who will be fully devoted to her and I was not going to stand in the way of that. Right now, I am still trying to contact Sasha, but she is not answering my calls and she has been moved to a different floor of the Chronicle. I don’t blame her for that. I just know that I want her back, but if being away from her will protect her from harm, I will love her from afar and ensure that no one else can hurt her.

The rest of the video show is on the Google Doc that House of Noir collaborated on.

“Notorious” Video Essay

Doing this video essay was more difficult than I anticipated. Choosing a scene to analyze was the simple part, but put my notes into words for the audience was tricky. I chose the final scene of “Notorious” since I felt it contained interesting editing technique. There were distinctions I made between the first part of the scene and the end. In the beginning of the scene, Devlin and Alicia are having an intimate moment together as he holds her close and tells her he has loved her from the time they met. With regards to editing here, there were minimal shot changes and this was to slow down the pace for the audience so they could really take in this moment of shared love between the characters. This is different from the next section of the scene because the shots are much shorter, some one or two seconds in length. This creates the suspenseful effect between Devlin, Alicia, Alex/Sebastian, his mother, and the men at the doorway. Also, having the editing pace can allude to the notion of how the most action-full moments of our lives go so fast; we often hear of how “everything went so fast” when there was a moment full of action. On a side note, in the shower killing scene in Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” the editing is very fast; many jump cuts that create suspense build-up throughout the scene, which may be a signature of Hitchcock and other directors to follow. Regarding cinematography, the first section contained many medium close up and close up shots of Devlin and Alicia, playing with the idea of being in this intimate moment with the characters. In the second section, I noticed that there were mostly medium, long, and extreme long shots of all the characters. This may suggest a distance between them and there is tension between them since they aren’t so close with one another. With mise-en-scene, the main setting in within Sebastian/Alex’s house where Alicia is being held against her will. The lighting was mostly high key and this allows for each actor’s facial expressions to be seen. It is slightly darker in Alicia’s room since the main source of lighting seems to come from the bedside lamp. This can held build the intimate close moment the two share together as they hold one another since it is soft lighting as opposed to the hard lighting of the second section of the scene. With sound, there is no background music playing as Devlin and Alicia are talking softly to one another and this allows the audience to pay more attention to this moment since it is the first time Devlin declares his obvious love for Alicia. Suspenseful music plays when Devlin opens the door and begins to descend the stairs with Alicia, Alex/Sebastian, and his mother towards the men at the bottom. The music becomes more boisterous as Alex/Sebastian walks back into the house to meet his fate.

For the reading this week, I remembered to take note of how characters don’t always tend to be in the central 3rd of the shot, and if they were it gives the appearance of a mugshot. Alex/Sebastian was in the center of the shot when he was being seen as guilty of something, for example when the two men call him back into the house. I also watched the Tarantino video and noticed how he uses low angle shots repeatedly to establish a dominant and weak character relationship, for example when Aldo Raine is standing over-top a Nazi general he is put into a position of power. “Top 20 Amazing Cinematic Techniques” was very interesting to watch since I had seen a few of the movies selected, such as the graphic match in the first part of “2001 A space Odyssey” and the long establishing shots in “Star Wars.” I didn’t get to use this knowledge in this film essay, but they were definitely enlightening. I also watched “Camera Angles and Techniques” and I remembered that fast, quick editing can make an action scene more dramatic and this came into play when everyone was descending the stairs in “Notorious.” This built up so much suspense and this editing technique helped enable that feeling more. I will be taking into account other facts from this video for when I film my episode for next week: varying camera angles create more depth and emotion.

Writing Assignment: Night Call Poem (2 pts)- “Love Calling Through the Night”

Love Calling Through the Night

Moonlight pools in from the open window,

saving the man drowning in his own shadows.

Throbbing temples, the internal voices pushing to be freed

through his lips; the words he is afraid to say aloud.

Her beauty.

A fiery canopy of curls against porcelain skin

and the secrets that swim in her ocean eyes.

The only wonder of his world,

she holds him captive, never leaving his mind.

No resistance, those restless nights he struggles

to memorize the labels he stamps on each feeling,

trying to make sense of something words don’t even understand

themselves.

Her smile melts his armor, yet he feels readied for

the waging war between logic and passion.

A gentle wind sweeps the curtains

and the locks of his hair,

Her voice whispering, calling his name,

his heart echoing hers, a two-syllable beat.

Unspoken love in the shadows of the night.

For this collaboration, I chose to use Kim Roehl’s Sasha Kellogg again because she is set to be the main romance in Sebastian Crane’s life. I wanted this poem to express who Sebastian has yet to confess his feelings for Sasha and he constantly has her on his mind. He is evermore curious about her since she is such a mystery and he has fallen for her. Sebastian fears telling her these feelings because he has been hurt in the past, but he trusts her enough to tell her soon. His mind tells him not to waste time on love, yet his heart disagrees. He knows that he can’t articulate the feelings he has for her and fears he won’t be able to say everything he wants to say to her. He knows words don’t truly describe a feeling like this and is conflicted in that way since he always knows how to express his thoughts, not when it comes to love though.

Visual Assignment: Poetry Art (3 pts)- “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep”- Sebastian Crane and Lawrence Spitler

do not stand at graveh

For this character collaboration post, I chose to make a picture that contained not only the words from a poem, but the visual created by those words. The poem “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep” is one I have read and seen at different times of my life and I wanted to make something dedicated to this poem. This visual shows how the death of Sebastian Crane greatly affected Lawrence Spitler.

Initially, I wanted a post where both characters were the same age, but I was so interested in Tiffany’s present-day character that I decided to come up with a story for how they know one another. By 2015, Sebastian would be 90 years old and Lawrence is in his 30s, so I had them be neighbors. When they first encountered each other, Lawrence thought Sebastian was just a senile old man, yet Sebastian saw himself in him and wanted to know more about him. So to initiate the conversations, Sebastian once put a letter from his mailbox into Lawrence’s (Sebastian still played his tricks, but these were not malicious) so that he would come to deliver it and he could try to talk to him more. Lawrence was still closed off, yet one night a man tried to break into Sebastian’s car and Lawrence scared him off. To thank Lawrence, Sebastian invited him over for a beer. Soon enough, Lawrence began visiting Sebastian’s house a several days a week and Sebastian brought out the best in Lawrence, as he was the most honest about his feelings when he was with Sebastian. Although they did have arguments about Lawrence’s lifestyle, Lawrence loved Sebastian like his own father and Sebastian like another son. They grow close to one another to a point where Lawrence sees him as the father figure he never really had after his own father passed when he was so young. Sebastian would tell Lawrence all about his life, from how he once was cold, but because of his loving wife Sasha and his brother Donovan, he was able to show his golden heart to all those he met. He once told Lawrence that “You cannot see light without walking through a field shadows. The light, the good, is waiting to be seized by you. Because every good and bad thing happens for a reason. We need the bad to know what good really is; to know what what is worth fighting for and what things can be left behind.” Sebastian saw himself in Lawrence from the moment they met and that was why he wanted the best for Lawrence and encouraged him to make better decisions or have more of an open heart. Lawrence drove Sebastian to the hospital when he had a severe stroke and stayed with him until the end. Before he passed on, he told Lawrence that he made the last years of his life better and that Lawrence would never be alone. At Sebastian’s funeral, Lawrence spoke of the man who showed him towards a new light and soon, he was the only one standing in front of his grave. He remembered Sebastian reciting the poem “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep” once when they were on his porch as he told Lawrence that the poem helped him cope with the losses of his father, Donovan, and Sasha. He told Lawrence that he believed the spirit does not stay at the grave, rather they stay beside those they love, like a guardian angel. Since then, Lawrence had a change of heart because of Sebastian and he sought to do better for himself and others.

To make this photo, I combined a picture of an angel statue and one of two men walking beside one another on Pixlr and used Powerpoint to add the text (which took a very long time figuring out how to do because of the color of the text). After, I adjusted the color of the final photo to make the poem stand out more.

Explorations of Beauty and Decay father-son-walking

I chose the angel statue because it represented the idea of a grave and in this particular post, Sebastian passes away and serves to be Lawrence’s guardian angel. For the picture of the two men walking together, I wanted this to be a picture of Sebastian and Lawrence going for a walk, showing their closeness to one another.

Design Assignment: Groom Poster (4 and a 1/2 pts) – An Ice Cold Love Triangle (collaborative characters)

titanic groom bas sasha new

It was about time I made a Groom poster and I have to say, I think it is beautiful. Kim Roehl and I collaborated to create this Titanic poster, featuring Sebastian Crane as Cal, Groom as Jack, and the lovely Sasha Kellogg as Rose. Initially, we were searching for a shot from the film where all three characters had their faces towards the camera, but kept running into pictures where they were either in profile or one was absent from the shot. So we decided that the two male characters could face the camera and we could cover the back of Rose’s head with Sasha’s photo. For Sebastian Crane, I felt he embodied the character of Cal Hockley in Titanic because of the arrogance he can frequently exude. The line “I always win. One way or another,” is a line I remember from this movie when Cal tells Jack he will not be ensured a seat on a lifeboat. We placed Groom as Jack Dawson because well, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love either of them? :) Kim had the one photo of Sasha Kellogg that we felt would be a perfect reaction to having two men wanting her. She has the look saying “I’m so loved,” which fits with her femme fatale persona. We also chose to do Titanic because it is a very well-known movie and we wanted to put a spin on it.

Kim was responsible for finding the Sasha and Groom photos as well as removing the backgrounds on all of the head shots using PowerPoint (now I’ve learned how to do that thanks to her). I found the photo of Sebastian, this scene from Titanic, and the title “Titanic.”
